Two BSEM Masterclasses
Restorative Practices vs Fair Consequences with Tom Brunzell & Increasing Student Stamina with Maddie Witter
- 8 April 2021
- 10:00 AM - 3:15 PM
The Berry Street Education Model Masterclasses are one-day workshops for participants to implement and sustain the Berry Street Education Model.
These special masterclass days are valuable opportunities for educators to extend their knowledge, re-connect and further their application of the model. Our masterclasses are a great way to collaborate with like-minded educators in our growing community of practice.
While each class has a different focus, we have designed the program to be informed by research, anchored in practice, and aimed at building sustainability and consistency in the Berry Street Education Model across a whole-school approach.
Restorative Practices vs Fair Consequences: reframing your whole-school positive behaviour approach
An exclusive masterclass with Tom Brunzell, Director Education, Berry Street
A consistent whole-school approach to school wide positive behaviour is essential for struggling students - and all students. However, schools struggle to revision their systems around restorative practices and fair consequences year-to-year when meeting the needs of their changing student cohorts. Through the trauma-informed and wellbeing-informed lenses of the Berry Street Education Model, we have developed tools and ways of working to assist the design and re-imagining of whole-school systems to support positive behaviour. Tom will share a number of strategies to support school leaders to work collaboratively with their staff to ensure that their own school-wide systems are trauma-aware, developmentally-appropriate and viewed as fair for all members of the school community.
Participants will learn to:
- Build-upon what is already working well with the aim of creating whole-school consistency for all staff members
- Review and/or reimagine their whole-school approach to positive behaviour support for all students with a specific focus on struggling students
- Explore the necessary strategies to implement both restorative practices and fair consequences
- Apply trauma-informed positive education strategies to ensure that each step in whole-school behaviour management empowers both students and teachers
- Integrate staffing structures to ensure implementation success
Increasing student stamina for literacy and reading
In this Masterclass, Maddie Witter, author of Reading Without Limits (Jossey-Bass, 2013) and Senior Curriculum Advisor at Berry Street Education, will teach you how to launch, build and maintain a culture of independent reading in your classrooms and schools reinforcing BSEM’s third domain - Stamina.
Some students can be unmotivated and disengaged when it comes to independent reading and learning. In these situations teachers & school leaders will need to be equipped with strategies to encourage persistence and cultivate a desire to learn within all their students. Participants at this masterclass will leave with a list of practical strategies that can be used to launch a thriving independent reading culture, create a culturally responsive classroom library booklist and apply solutions for common independent reading pitfalls.
This workshop will help you dramatically improve student stamina, so that you can develop a culture of persistence and love of learning for all students.
Please bring the following materials for discussion within this master class:
- Your school’s pre-established values, code of conduct, or other student expectations documents
- Documents which explain your school’s current whole-school behaviour support process and/or School Wide Positive Behaviour Support matrix
- Your school’s current strategic plan
