Tools to take participation to the next level
- 7 August - 8 August 2019
The language of youth participation has woven itself into policies, charters, frameworks and practice manuals across the welfare and support sector. From youth centres to residential care units, from agency boardrooms to government committees the notion of needing to ‘hear the voice of young people’ is considered a given.
Despite this almost universal commitment, the practice of engaging young people as informants is inconsistent at best, and (arguably) damaging at worst.
If we go a step further and look at where young people are not just heard, but are active participants in and drivers of action and change, the examples become even thinner on the ground. What if we go a step further, even? What if we start to see young people as partners in an important exchange process; exchange of ideas, of knowledge, of skills, expertise and information?
Designed to radically shift your youth engagement practice from engagement to exchange, this 2-day training has been developed with lived experience at its core. Demonstrating YOUth exCHANGE in action throughout both days, facilitators Kirra-Alyssa Horley, K.C., Emilie Cuinn and Lauren Oliver draw their collective expertise from a combination of lived experience and professional practice.
Attendees can expect to engage in a combination of reflection, discussion and action that:
- Provides an insight into participatory practice from a young person’s perspective;
- Challenges assumptions and preconceptions about youth work, young people, disadvantage and participation;
- Addresses some of the key barriers to young people’s participation; and
- Develops a set of strategies and tools to radically shift the way we engage and exchange with young people.
Other dates are available for this training. See other dates.

What You Will Learn
Day 1 will explore the notion of exchange as a practice, providing opportunities to look at what and why this shift away from traditional participatory models is needed.
Day one will enable you to:
• Assess your own and your organisation’s approach to youth participation and engagement;
• Understand the concept of youth exchange and how it can be applied to your context;
• Identify barriers to youth exchange and opportunities for tackling these within your organisation or your own practice.
Day 2 will cover practical strategies to embed effective exchange practices within programs and organisations. We will identify and adapt tools and approaches to fit your context.
Day two will provide you with:

More about Y-Change
Y-Change was piloted in 2016 as a youth leadership and social change project. It was developed through a collaboration between a small group of young people with lived experience of disadvantage (Damian Matthews, Lily Graham and Crystal Moon) and Berry Street’s Senior Advisor Youth Engagement (Lauren Oliver).
The project was intended to provide a capacity building ‘bridge’ between young people who had experienced disadvantage and the opportunities to drive and lead social change initiatives.
Since the 2016 pilot, Y-Change has recruited, trained and employed over 30 young people with lived experience of disadvantage (eight of whom started their training in January 2019). Once recruited they are put through six months of training in public speaking, facilitation, media, campaigning and activism. Following the training they are offered 12-month casual employment contracts as Lived Experience Consultants.
The Y-Change team works using lived experience as a form of expertise to inform and drive organisational, social and systemic change. They do this through public speaking engagements, developing and delivering training, providing consultancy to other organisations and bodies, and pursuing advocacy projects in their specific areas of expertise.
Y-Change is in constant iterative development, informed and driven by the young people who are in it.
Based in transformational identity work, a deep respect for the expertise young people develop through their lived experience, and a firm belief that their exclusion from decision-making circles is fundamentally negligent, Y-Change represents a radical shift in how we work alongside young experts.
Y-Change for Hire
The Y-Change team has a broad range of expertise across different experiences of disadvantage. They are trained in communication, consulting and facilitation skills. If you or your organisation would like to engage the services of the team as consultants, project workers, speakers or facilitators please contact Lauren Oliver on (03) 9429 9266 or via firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your needs.
